Coaches in the early morning, run through lids and cups as fast as dry erase makers when designing the newest game day scheme. We have frequented many a gas station in our careers before hitting the road or early morning meetings. However, my favorite coffee is simply found when I arrive at work. The Bunn Coffee Maker in our office maybe the most beloved piece of machinery in our program. I guess it is the comfort of being in a football environment and the joy of fellowship with our coaches. Most of us cannot start our day until we have fixed that perfect cup of coffee and some could make this an all day affair. We have all the ingredients available for everyone to stir up and begin their successful daily routine.
However, the one thing we do not provide in the office is a “Lid” to protect that precious morning cup. In theory none of us are going to let it sit long enough to get cold and we cautiously trust each other enough not to spill. Outside the office is the only time a “To Go Lid” is needed for protection. I normally just grab one from the gas station but never pay attention to the writing on top. The other day, while on the road, I just happened to look down and actually read the “Lid”. This particular lid had “Caution Hot” in 3 different languages, a serial number, recyclable sign, and a small drinking hole. The wording that morning struck me in a whole different way than normal. That message is really many of us everyday, we are “On The Go” needing protection, living in caution of being “burned”, feeling like another number, and that we can only pour out in small amounts. Once we get outside of our comfort zone, we need a lid on us for constant protection that ultimately holds us back from becoming our best. I want to warn you that this is the farthest from the truth. The world can hold you back from your ultimate potential by fear and making one feel insignificant outside their comfort zone. Even though we are just talking about a simple morning ritual, this analogy rings so true to many of us each and every day.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
-Matthew 5:15-16
“Caution Hot” in 3 different languages… Warning you that the inner contents could burn you if not careful. Trust me… I know that protecting who you are is very important in today’s society. However, some people choose to trust no one to the point they never experience joy in relationships and excelling in a given role. Like it is saying caution, caution, caution…. you are better off being a loner, hiding from your problems, and dismissing your dreams. No doubt the world can be tough, and anytime you step out of your comfort zone you are open to judgment, criticism, and failed relationships. However, I would prefer to get a little burned than to be seen in small amounts. You are not meant to be covered up and come out a little at a time. You are meant to bring impact, warm others, and shine! Let the world know to be cautioned, that you are setting the temperature today!
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. -Psalm 139: 13-14
The serial number and recyclable sign…. I think many feel this way often as well. That we are just another number and insignificant. Like what we bring to the table can be replaced by anyone or just another recyclable product. Although this maybe true with a generic coffee “Lid”, it is not true with the beauty inside of each of us. When people feel insignificant they become stagnant, unproductive, and cold to their purpose. There is only one person on this earth that has your ingredients. The Lord has specifically designed you with an incredible purpose, do not sit and grow cold or stagnant. Remember anyone’s inability to see your value does not decrease your worth. You have great value and also maybe the needed “re-heat” for someone you are not expecting. The only thing that needs recycling is your best everyday. As I tell my kids… “Keep being YOU because YOU is good enough..“
The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him.
-Psalm 28:7
The small drinking hole…. This drives me crazy driving at night, half the time trying to sip coffee but spilling all over myself. I am so worried about making a mess that I actually make it worse. In these moments of struggling I probably just need to take the lid off. This can be us daily, feeling trapped as we battle all the external factors. We feel there are barriers around us that make us more of a mess. This feeling mainly comes from thoughts, tasks, or people that bring no value and drain mental energy. You have a feeling of entrapment on your daily life and potential. The things that put a “Lid” on you need to be eliminated from your world as much as possible. The Lord designed you for good, to maximize your gifts, and he vows to be your strength and shield throughout it all. Take the “Lid” off of your potential and pour yourself into this world!
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” – 2 Timothy 1:7
The next time a “To Go” lid is needed on that warm cup, be reminded that you are in complete control of your life. If you are cold inside then it is time to make the choice and warm back up. I have seen many never get out of their comfort zone, grow, and seek success due to fear, trust issues, or a negative thought process. Remember, the Lord uniquely made you, has you protected, keeps you warm, and wants you fearless in pursuit of your God Given Purpose. There is no lid on this life and there is an ocean of opportunity outside your comfort zone. So if something is holding you back ,”It is Time To Go” be who you are created to be, shoot for your dreams, and impact people for the better!
