“He who would accomplish little need sacrifice little; he who would achieve much must sacrifice much. He who would attain highly must sacrifice greatly.”
-James Allen
Great players and teams go beyond the normal, they do the extra work to be great. A lot of players confuse doing working outs, meetings, and practice as the sacrifice. However, doing what the team requires is not sacrifice. Sacrifice is going beyond what is expected; it is when one gives up personal time for the sake of improvement, service, or team success. If you want to advance in anything in life, you have to do more than is required. You can’t take off everyday when the bell rings, you must commit to the extra.
What often keeps us from sacrificing is not our willingness, but our fear of standing out in the crowd. In great cultures, this becomes the standard… However, in reality, these environments have become more of the minority than the majority. So what are the enemies of sacrifice? And how do we move past this to sell out to our goals and dreams…
“WE HAVE A THEATER IN OUR MINDS — WE LIVE IN THE NARRATIVE WE CREATE FOR OURSELVES.”
- NEGATIVITY: In the words of Nick Saban, “Mediocre people don’t like high-achievers, and high-achievers don’t like mediocre people.” You can’t let the negative people keep you from reaching your potential. The issue is not their existence, but our engagement. What defeats negativity? OUR CHOICES… Don’t engage in it and block it out.
- INSECURITY: This stems from the thought that I am not enough… Makes you think only of yourself, and creates the fear that you will look foolish. When we feel less, we seek validation more. This limits our capability to sell out to getting better. What defeats insecurity? Knowledge and the truth… The fact that what you are thinking is not true… You are Born to be Special!
- WORRY: The cause of worry is not trusting and trying to predict the future. Puts you into protection mode and isolates you. Gives you paralysis by analysis… You can’t worry if your work is going to pay off… If you don’t sell out, it is worse to have regret. What defeats worry? Action… Get in motion… Take the first step!
- COMPARISON: It is universal to think you are at a disadvantage. What’s causes comparison issues? The focus you put on your external status… Your emphasis on what other people think of you, or what they have vs what you have. What defeats comparison? Shifting your focus on your internal status… Who you are deep down, and the standard for your life. This training gives you authority over your thoughts and emotions.
“The difference between the good and the great, is their ability to sacrifice.”
