“We Are What We Repeatedly Do. Excellence Therefore, Is Not An Act But A Habit.”
– Aristotle
Discipline is about CHOICES… NOT FEELINGS. The key to any improvement is consistency in action. If you want to achieve success, then there has to be a commitment to the right process. Disciplined players are where they are supposed to be, doing what they are supposed to do, and when they are supposed to it on a consistent basis. They do the right thing whether they feel like it or not. Everybody is human, and has moments of not wanting to do the right things…
The players that can consistently make the right choice to this natural problem, separate themselves from the competition. If you want to gain trust from your coaches, then you have to be consistent. Successful athletics will always require the trust in each person. Trust is gained through consistent action in every part of a player’s life. Discipline is the highway to becoming a player led team. Let’s break down the 3 truths of discipline…
- IS ABOUT CHOICES NOT FEELINGS: Nobody gets what they really want only doing what they enjoy. There are always 2 daily questions… “There is something I don’t want to do, that I need to do… Will I do it anyway?” & “There is something I want to do but shouldn’t do… Can I stay away from it?”
- HAS NO LIMITS: Mediocre performers have self-imposed limitations. In their mind, they can only do so much. To be truly disciplined, hard cannot be a stopping force for you. It has to go beyond being the coaches’ expectations and become the standard you have for yourself.
- CREATES HABITS & ROUTINE: If your habits don’t match your goals… Then you either need to change your goals or change your habits. Discipline is about training the brain and heart… This gives you structure in your life and a successful routine. This gives you confidence and results.
“Discipline is the greatest indicator that you have a personal standard.”
