Building Habits of Excellence in Student Athletes

Players are expected to give their “Best Effort” and compete in all areas of their daily lives. Attendance, Assignments, & Attitude are what you control every day as a student. This is a life skill; you will always have somewhere to be, something to do, and people to deal with. This is not about making great grades but being a responsible student. I have never had a player have a bad day in school, and then a good day on the field. Student-athletes must be able to manage what it takes in the classroom and as a player. Just like in life as an adult, you must be able handle a job, a family, and your role in the community.

The school day is the breeding ground for habits of excellence. You reinforce great habits every time you show up, do the work, and treat people well. A great day in school helps you have a great day on the athletic field. Players that struggle understanding this concept will eventually have the same problems on their athletic teams. We are all creatures of our habits. There is a direct correlation between a responsible student and a trusted athlete. Players that can be consistent in this area earn a great deal of trust from their coach. Player led teams have dedicated themselves to a life of discipline.

3 KEYS

  1. 3 BASICS IN EVERYDAY LIFE
    • SOMEWHERE TO BE (ATTENDANCE)
    • SOMETHING TO DO (ASSIGNMENTS)
    • SOMEONE TO DEAL WITH (ATTITUDE)
  2. UNDERSTAND THAT EVERYTHING ADDS UP
    • YOU GAIN TRUST IN THIS PROCESS
    • YOU ARE THE SUM OF ALL YOUR REPS
  3. YOUR “ONE DAY” IS COMING
    • YOUR PREPARATION IS THE ONLY THING YOU CONTROL
    • YOUR CONSISTENCY IN ALL AREAS OF LIFE IS WHAT WILL GIVE YOU THE BEST CHANCE OF SUCCESS AT THE MOMENT OF TRUTH

“AT THE MOMENT OF TRUTH, THERE ARE EITHER RESULTS OR REASONS.”
